Saturday September 21st
Join Spartan Volunteer Network, York City Public Works, Beekeeping Club, and Plant & Gardening Club to help maintain the Jackson St. Rain Gardens! A series of 14 garden boxes with native plants were installed on SpartanGreen 2024 as an on-going community project to help with storm-drain flooding and plant overgrowth. We will also be installing some bird houses!
Who do we need?
Individuals and groups such as from clubs, Greek life, & athletic teams willing to volunteer for 2.5 hours. We will need about 3 people per garden box. Larger groups will be assigned to the intersections that have more garden boxes so they can stay together. Individuals will be grouped with other individuals. This is a great opportunity to meet new people, team bond, and community outreach!
What will volunteers be doing?
Volunteers will be assigned to garden boxes and tasked to:
- Pick up trash/litter around garden
- Weeding
- Planting new plants (as needed)
- Mulching (as needed)
- Water
- Decorate and label the boxes
Where will we meet?
We are asking volunteers to arrive between 9:15-9:25AM at the Creek Crossing pedestrian bridge (located on Main campus outside of Humanities) by the large Willow trees. You will be grouped, assigned gardens, and given gloves. Together we will walk towards the Jackson St. intersections of Jessop (2) , Manor (8), and Pershing (4); collectively there are 14 boxes. We are aiming to be done by 12:00PM but if you're team is done earlier you are welcomed to leave as needed!
Materials
All materials will be provided by the sponsoring organizations:
- Spartan Volunteer Network will give gloves
- York City Public works will provide equipment such as bags, water, mulch etc.
- Beekeeping and Plant and Gardening club will provide guidance on weeding/planting and decorations
