Help the Horn Farm Center winterize our 8-acre riparian buffer while learning about perennial plants, ecology, and ways to restore local waterways!
- Overview & responsibilities:
- We're seeking volunteers to help us bolster part of our riparian buffer by sheet mulching grassy paths in preparation for spring planting.
- This work is a beginning step in taking our streamside restoration efforts to the next level: allowing us to incorporate even more native plants and their services into the landscape in the near future. We'll be sheet-mulching in the Miyawaki-style section of the restoration landscape.
- Learn more about the Miyawaki method for planting forests here.
- Time allowing, volunteers will also help to ensure our young trees are protected and primed for the approaching winter. Additional work may include checking and righting tree tubes, managing invasives, planting last-minute saplings, and fortifying tree bases with rocks to prevent vole damage during the winter.
- Transportation:
- Volunteers are invited to provide their own transportation.
- SVN staff will coordinate with volunteers to arrange a carpool if possible, but carpools are not guaranteed.
- Supplies: The Community Partner will provide supplies. Volunteers who have their own gloves are encouraged to bring them.
