Volunteer: Riparian Buffer Tree Tending: Fall 2025

Take part in the Horn Farm Center's growing ecosystem of learning and action by helping us protect local waterways and foster a resilient ecosystem.

About the Organization:

The Horn Farm Center is an environmental nonprofit with a mission to foster ecological learning through land stewardship, community partnership, and hands-on experiences. From regenerative gardens to habitat restoration, our landscape serves as a hands-on learning hub empowering our community with earth-based knowledge and skills. To learn more, take a virtual tour or check out our upcoming classes and events.

About this Volunteer Opportunity:

For the Fall 2025 season, we're seeking volunteers to help us tend our newly-planted 10-acre riparian buffer. Hands on the land are critical as we protect water and build back biodiversity on retired farmland without the use of herbicides or large machines. To learn more about riparian buffers and how they support the shared health of humans and local ecology, visit the Horn Farm's blog series: For the Whole Stream

Volunteer Responsibilities:

Depending on the season, weather, available materials, and number of volunteers, Fall 2025 riparian buffer workdays may entail one or more of the following tasks:

Monitoring current plantings by checking and adjusting tree tubes, tracking mortality, and hand-clearing overgrowth.Fortifying new plantings for winter by depositing rocks around trees to deter vole nesting.Preparing beds for new live stake plantings by aerating soil and spreading leaf mulch.Planting new tree and shrub saplings.Harvesting agroforestry products like American hazelnuts (Corylus americana) in the early fall and live stakes in late winter.

Volunteer Requirements:

Physical activity: Volunteers should be able-bodied for minor physical labor, including stooping, pulling, shoveling, and spending time outside in potentially rainy, hot, or cold conditions. Volunteer: Keystone State Games

The White Rose Figure Skating Club will be hosting a large skating competition, The Keystone State Games, and we need YOUR help!  This competition gives figure skaters a chance to show off the skills they have learned and compete against other skaters from surrounding areas.  This competition is entirely volunteer run and we can't make it happen, without the help of people like you!  This two day competition begins early Saturday morning (8am) and runs through the evening, ending around 9pm.  The second day begins early, around 8am, and will conclude mid afternoon.  We need volunteers to help with set up and break down, account running, and rink monitoring.  Volunteer training will be held prior to the competition so you will know exactly what to do when you arrive on the day of the competition.

-Account Runners- This position requires a bit more physical activity.  You will be transporting documentation from the judges in the rink to the accountants upstairs where data will be imported in the computer and copied.  You will be in and out of the cold.

-Rink Monitors- This position will be inside of the rink.  You will be at a check in table where competing skaters will check in before taking the ice.  You will be responsible for keeping track of the schedule and timing and will be communicating with skaters, coaches and the judges.

** Please dress warmly- you will be in an ice rink for extended periods of time. A jacket, gloves and warm shoes are recommended! A hospitality room is available for all volunteers to grab a snack during their shift! Volunteer training will be held prior to the event so you know and understand the responsibilities of an account runner and rink monitor prior to the competition.

Organization: White Rose Figure Skating Club
