About the Pawpaw festival: On Saturday, September 20th from 9am to 5pm, the Horn Farm Center will host our largest annual event: the 21st Annual York County Pawpaw Festival.

This outdoor, family-friendly event brings together local food vendors, artisans, native plant nurseries, and nature-based educators. The centerpiece of the festival is the pawpaw: the largest edible fruit indigenous to the Eastern United States, growing naturally throughout the Susquehanna Riverlands! Similar in taste to tropical fruits, the pawpaw is a unique, nutritious, and ecologically significant delicacy that ripens for a short period of time from mid-September to mid-October.

Location: 4945 Horn Road, York, PA 17406 Date & time: Saturday, 9/20, 9am-5pm Volunteer shifts are divided between morning times and afternoon times, each ~4-5 hours in length. • Use the master schedule to determine which participants will be arriving for which registration time. Ensure they are at the correct registration time and check them off as they register

• Check to see if they have signed the electronic waiver in advance of arrival. (If completed, the participants’ name will be highlighted on the event schedule)

• If name is not highlighted on schedule, have them complete a paper participant waiver and bring it with them to staging

• Provide them with a wrist band (if this is the method for waiver identification)

• Provide each participant with a name tag that is clearly visible. Place name tag on their upper arm. This way the harness will not cover the tag.

• Collect all droppable items from participants including phones, keys, coins, etc.

• Send participants to Staging as they arrive.

• People will come late (and early) but do your best to keep them in their designated groups.

• The goal is to move participants through the process efficiently and quickly if participants come too early, i.e. more than 45 minutes, ask them to return at their designated registration time

Volunteer: Santa Visits Martin Library, First Friday December 2025

Martin Library hosts Santa on the First Friday in December. Last Year we had over 500 guests visit with Santa. While the families are waiting we have stations throughout the Children's Room with crafts and activities for the children and their families. We need help at each craft station, and general 'crowd control".  We want every child to have a memory of visiting Santa at Martin Library and to give their families the opportunity to learn more about the library.

Volunteer: Keystone State Games

The White Rose Figure Skating Club will be hosting a large skating competition, The Keystone State Games, and we need YOUR help!  This competition gives figure skaters a chance to show off the skills they have learned and compete against other skaters from surrounding areas.  This competition is entirely volunteer run and we can't make it happen, without the help of people like you!  This two day competition begins early Saturday morning (8am) and runs through the evening, ending around 9pm.  The second day begins early, around 8am, and will conclude mid afternoon.  We need volunteers to help with set up and break down, account running, and rink monitoring.  Volunteer training will be held prior to the competition so you will know exactly what to do when you arrive on the day of the competition. 

-Account Runners- This position requires a bit more physical activity.  You will be transporting documentation from the judges in the rink to the accountants upstairs where data will be imported in the computer and copied.  You will be in and out of the cold.

-Rink Monitors- This position will be inside of the rink.  You will be at a check in table where competing skaters will check in before taking the ice.  You will be responsible for keeping track of the schedule and timing and will be communicating with skaters, coaches and the judges.


** Please dress warmly- you will be in an ice rink for extended periods of time. A jacket, gloves and warm shoes are recommended! A hospitality room is available for all volunteers to grab a snack during their shift! Volunteer training will be held prior to the event so you know and understand the responsibilities of an account runner and rink monitor prior to the competition.

Be ready to help participants with movement, when needed. Be supportive and encouraging of participants.

Overview: Harvest of Blessing is a food and clothing pantry in downtown York. Volunteers are needed for distribution days!

Volunteer: Insurance Counseling for Older Adults (PA MEDI Counselor) - training provided

Overview | PA-MEDI is the State Health Insurance Assistance Program. Trained volunteers provide free, unbiased insurance counseling to people on Medicare, assist with comparing plans, educate, advocate, and make appropriate referrals.

Responsibilities | Duties will be completed at a local counseling site and by phone. Schedule

Schedule

This volunteer opportunity is best suited to those who have a flexible daytime schedule. The monthly time commitment for this opportunity is at least 10-15 hours per month. There is a two year time commitment required due to training requirements. Volunteers must attend local and state trainings and attend monthly local PA MEDI meetings.
